About the position


Overview of the role:

To apply you will need a proven experience as a medical technologist coupled with;
  1. Knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation and terminology used in the area of responsibility
  2. Basic computer skills
  3. Ability to maintain effective reporting procedures and control workflow
  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers, and clients
  5. You will need to be meticulous and organized and be able to follow an issue to resolution.
  6. You will need to take ownership and accountability for your work and deliver to a high standard.
  7. Be fluent in English, you will need to possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills enabling you to deal with queries in a timely manner.
  8. You should be able to produce accurate work to tight deadlines within a pressurised environment.
Lab Experience required to be considered

TB experience or working in a TB laboratory with PCR /molecular platforms for TB

Role Responsibilities:
  1. Perform routine and complex analysis of patient specimens according to standard operating procedures (SOPs). Evaluate specimen acceptability upon receipt and during the review of analysis results. Evaluate validity of specimen results against the algorithms displayed by the lab computer system. Document all corrective actions taken. Perform secondary review of patient results when required to ensure accuracy of primary result entry.
  2. Provide oversight and guidance to Medical Laboratory Technicians and/or Assistants.
  3. Maintain quality control of all laboratory testing to ensure accurate and timely lab reporting.
  4. Perform pending workload review periodically during the day; find pending assays and resolve outstanding work prior to the completion of testing for the day.
  5. Assist in the development and writing of new Medical laboratory procedures and techniques.
  6. Follow safety procedures as per laboratory SOPs.
  7. Notify appropriate staff of supply shortages.
  8. Participate in continuing education through self-study, attending in-services and off-site lectures and meetings.
Required Knowledge, skills and abilities:
  1. Good knowledge of the Clinical Pathology procedures used in the area of responsibility
  2. Knowledge of Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP) and other regulatory agency standards within area of responsibility
  3. Knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices including standard precautions and hazardous chemical handling
  4. Knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation and terminology used in the area of responsibility
  5. Basic computer skills
  6. Ability to maintain effective reporting procedures and control workflow
  7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers, and clients
Minimum Required Education and Experience:
  • BTech or National diploma in biomedical technology with at least 3 years experience working in a TB laboratory
  • Current registration with HPCSA in Microbiology and/or clinical pathology disciplines
